Membership is open to all company directors and management officials of a company. The membership grades are in three categories
Corporate membership:                  

Corporate members are companies, business enterprises, institutions or organizations who are supportive of the roles, objectives and activities of the IOD and align themselves with good Corporate Governance practices and business ethics. These members contribute an annual subscription fee as specified in the membership application form.

  • A director of an entity or a proprietor of an enterprise which has active operations or
  • A partner in a professional practice or a senior executive or officer of another entity who reports directly to a member of the body that is responsible for the strategic direction of that entity and the implementation of its corporate governance.
Individual Membership:

These are those members who wish to be associated with the institute because of their interest in corporate governance. For individual membership, the person must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • Be a director or alternate director of a company; or
  • Be a director or alternate director of a Parastatal body; or
  • A company secretary of a company; or
  • A senior executive with managerial responsibilities; or
  • A partner, associate, or senior manager of a professional practice (e.g. accountants, arctects, stockbrokers, legal counsel)
  • An executive member at a senior level in national, regional, or local government
  • Academic personnel
  • A student pursuing a career in law, business administration, Accountancy, economics e.t.c

Student Membership:

Student members are those who wish to be associated with the institute because of their interest in corporate governance but who do not have the experience to qualify as full members.  Student members will have full access to all services provided by the Institute and this applies where you are:

  • A student in University, college or any other institution of higher learning pursuing a career in Accountancy, Business Administration, Law or any other course that boarders on Corporate Governance.

The institute of Directors in Malawi offers an extensive list of exclusive membership benefits, befitting the calibre and strength of our membership base. These inter alia are:
  • Director publications: the IOD will provide you with technical updates and other scholarly publications for use and updating of members over both local and international developments in as far as their stewardship is concerned.
  • Training and development: This is aimed at bringing about continual development and life long learning.
  • Advisory services:  Guidance on matters relating to board, guidelines, best practice statements discussions or position papers.
  • Code of best practice for Corporate Governance: IOD also provides its members with the revised copies of codes of best practice highlighting any significant additions/ alterations that have been made.
  • Director newsletter: an inspiring, essential business read that reflects the real issues and interests of directors will be produced initially half yearly.

Affiliate

Our association and partnership with the Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF) provides us with a broad knowledge base of Corporate Governance and management of organisations. IOD in conjunction with the Global Corporate Governance Forum has recently (August 2009) conducted Training of Trainers, Board leadership program course for IOD facilitators. The corporate governance Board Leadership Training resources Kit provides an exhaustive curriculum to educate directors about their board roles and the business case for corporate governance best practices. By enhancing the quality of director training, the forum is advancing board leadership best practices worldwide.
Unique to this resources kit is its integration of interactive learning strategies that enrich a training session for adult learners.
